52 weeks old.

Tomorrow is the day of your birth, still so unbelievable.

You are doing a lot of new, interesting things these days! First, you will stand on your own but only until you realize you aren’t holding onto anything & then you will sit down. You will stand on the bed & clap it is so funny, but as soon as you know then you plop down. We are not encouraging standing or walking, just letting you go at your own pace.

You have a lot more body control all of a sudden though, you can crawl on & off the bed with no problems and are much more agile in general. You love to climb, climb on boxes, suitcases, the shelves in the refrigerator, anything you can.

You are much more deliberate, in your movements but in other behaviors as well. Talking, throwing yourself backwards, kicking… we are definitely making the transition into toddlerhood.

(Please excuse that this is a seemingly random collection of thoughts & they are not explained thoroughly or organized – you are at the tail end of a nap & I really just want to get down what is going on with you lately so it is here & I don’t forget anything!!!)

You are becoming increasingly more “frustrated” a lot of the time. It is very similar to the frustrated phase you went through before you started crawling.. Your temperament is pretty even throughout the day but with a level of frustration at almost ALL TIMES.

You love the white cats at my parent’s house but it seems that black/dark colored cats scare you. You have been scared of darker cats at three different friend’s houses, interesting.

There is a radio at Grandma Dorothy’s at your level that you push the buttons on. Sometimes you push the ‘on’ button & it turns on to a station that is static, it scares you so much when it happens!

You are scared of the vacuum, blender, and food processor but are ok as long as someone is holding you. We simulate the sound with “whoo, whoo, whoo” & a circular motion with our hands before we turn the blender or processor on and then say “1,2,3” before pushing the button & that seems to help. You bury your face into me initially but then come out & usually imitate the “whoo, whoo, whoo” sound & shake your hands, so cute.

You love almost all foods and will try anything – but in terms of quantity you don’t actually eat THAT much. We still do not do dairy or grains or meat (or eggs now since I suspect some sort of mild allergy). New foods you have tried lately though are chia seeds, quinoa, and oats.

You are going through something a little crazy with nursing. If I am sitting down or still or wearing you you want my boobs out and to pop on & off as you wish although you are barely even nursing. It is really frustrating, I am having a hard time with it and my patience is a lot lower than I would like. I am trying to work through it and understand exactly what is going on to cause it but it has been going on for a little while and if I refuse you throw a huge fit but if I can distract or redirect you you are fine. It isn’t when you are tired, hungry, thirsty, it is ALL of the time. Like I said I am still working through it but will post what/how we really try to proceed with in regards and how it turns out.

You take one pretty good nap a day and sometimes get a second in the later afternoon/evening but sometimes not. We are kind of all over the place now and it has been really hard to work out what exactly you need in terms of napping… kind of taking it day by day at the moment.

I can’t think of anything right at the moment so we will insert some pictures here! This is picture heavy because I just love the random moments captured, your faces, gestures, and basically what my day looks like every day.

I started trying to capture a picture to send to your nana the morning of her birthday & I just got cute pose after cute pose after cute pose.

Another attempt at capturing that personality of yours that results in the silliest things. You like to clench or fists or do open palms and clench your teeth & make this crazy face. It gets me every time, I literally LOL.

it was a drizzly day so we were trying to find ways to stay entertained inside, spending some time with our friends!

I also captured this video of you babbling this week, OH EM GEE. Seriously, you are just too adorable. You were very intentional with this conversation while looking at yourself in the front facing camera. love love love.

Our plans for your birthday didn’t end up working out as planned so tomorrow we are just going to spend the day in Roseville by Daddy’s work – go to play time at the local library, have some brunch, a good nap in the Ergo, some play time at the park, and dinner at an all vegan restaurant, Bagaan, that has stellar reviews on Yelp. Can’t wait to celebrate with you little babe!!!!!! XXXOOOOOO

I also can’t believe this is your last weekly update . I didn’t get quite all 52 completed (I will though!) but I hope I captured as many noteworthy (& also just the day to day as it evolved!) things from your first year as I could have. This year has been a roller coaster (I know this is probably the 314th time I have said that) but I will save my musings for a one year old post dedicated to my thoughts & how our relationship has come to be where it is today. I love you so much!!!

51 weeks old.

one week until your birthday… 7 more days until your first year is officially over. I literally have not been sad for a second as your birthday has been approaching, until right now this very moment as I wrote that & something washed over me and tears welled up in my eyes.

It has been such a roller coaster of a year and I think all that is motherhood just really overwhelmed me as I reflected on the fact that an entire year has passed and a day that I have thought about for so long will be here so shortly.

We spent the 51st week of your life back in California, we are still trying to figure out a routine and get settled in here. Right now most of our days are eating, spending time outside, and play time inside mixed with household chores, making dinner, etc.

Here are a few random captures…

enjoying our time outside, your gear is a random mess of whatever I could throw on before you kicked/screamed/crawled away. The weather is beautiful, sunny but with a chilly wind.

Just a sweet photo of such a sweet boy. You are just so amazing every morning when you wake up. It is still my most treasured time with you (despite the fact that I am almost always still tired). We cuddle, play, talk about our day ahead, and you always have tons of kisses and babble and goodness that makes being a mama so heart filling.

We spent this week of your life back in Arizona visiting. We had tons of fun seeing friends again, celebrating Valentine’s day, attending Xan’s first birthday party & just hanging out with Granny. We did TONS of walking, some cooking, and just spent lots of time with mama and baby friends.

Later that morning we helped babysit Layla while her mama Kelsey went to work! Layla is 8 months so it is not physically possible that I could have an 8 month old & 11 month old, but sheesh, that would be crazy. We had lots of fun but two littles is extremely challenging and always reaffirms for both daddy & I that we really enjoy savoring our time with just you.

I probably say this every week but you are babbling TONS more each & every day. You have added ‘ba-ba’ to your sounds and I swear I feel like we communicate all day long (which we do) except you have no actual words. It is so fascinating to me. I am also exhausted of talking by the end of the day, explaining everything to you all day long is a lot of talking. We rarely have moments of silence and it is just another thing you don’t really ever realize or think about before you have a child.

I know this is not the best video but I captured you doing “all done” the other day. You are clearly upset & I am so sorry but I wanted to show your daddy so bad! We are trying to stay consistent with signing to you but can definitely be better. I just love watching you grow & develop, it is so incredible.

This is another quick one, sorry, but I will try to get more detailed over the next two weeks, when the week by week of the first year officially ends, AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. LOVE YOU!!!!

11 months old.

I am SO behind here Thresh, super sorry! With our move, not having internet, having internet but it being super slow, you refusing our second nap for a lot of days in a row, and the numerous projects (unpacking, organizing, chicken coop, garden fence, occasions, etc.) that are going on the past four weeks (& a ten month update) here have been neglected ):

I will catch up though, it just may take me some time! February 7th marked the end of your 11th month of life though and when I say it is unreal I mean it the most this time around. Almost a year… so crazy.

I will try to quickly recap some things that have been happening with you…

you talk A LOT, we don’t understand it but you say things like ab-dah, ah-gah, & ma-ma often.

You do this hilarious thing where you tense up and get the craziest look on your face & clench your fists, and then usually laugh & laugh

You love to bang your straw cup around & throw it on the ground

You mimic a lot of things, the way we play with toys, coughing, laughing, snorting, it is so fascinating to watch.

You love small details, you try to stick your finger into the littlest holes, you love trying to pick my nose & sticking your hand in my mouth and you always touch the very small details on things.

You are ready for a morning nap pretty early after you wake up, two hours or so, but are seriously refusing an afternoon nap. You may yawn or something but you don’t even act tired, not grumpy or anything and even a long car ride with me in the back nursing you couldn’t get you to sleep yesterday. I need to research more about eleven month old sleep patterns and length of awake periods and get to a place I feel comfortable. My job is to provide you with what you need and if you don’t need a second nap then that is what it will be, I will say that I personally am not ready for that, only having one hour in the morning to myself is  H A R D.

This is the month, I am feeling completely different towards ‘parenting’. It is now way less about meeting your basic needs and way more about your development. It is hard to explain in few words but everything we do, say, around you, with you, every way we interact with you now seems insanely important and significant. I can see you shaping into an independent little person right in front of my eyes and it is amazing and so scary all at once. The way we prefer to interact with you is the hugest factor in our daily lives right now and can be overwhelming at times. Way more on this later.

You LOVE to cuddle when you are sleeping now. You sleep best WAY cuddled up with me and I just love it. I actually got really good sleep last night, you probably woke up 5-ish times to nurse that I remember but you actually kept the covers on and we were just so warm & cuddly all night and I was in a very peaceful sleep.

You use everything as a ‘walker’ these days, stools, chairs, your cars, you hold on to them & walk across the floor. Just so funny to witness. Everyone is so obsessed with you walking and I honestly don’t get it at all. I am not in any type of hurry for you to grow up or achieve any milestones, I love watching you come into things at your own time and seriously, I never even think about when you will be walking. Who knows, I love you crawling and it is so good for your brain & physical development and watching the awareness and control you have over your body now is so fascinating to me.

Ok, on to some pictures!

trying to document the above 'walker' action. You love this bus & putting the people in & out of it, it was mine when I was little!

we took a walk to a coffee shop so you could get a nap in the Ergo & while I was sipping some coffee & catching up on some reading you insisted on sleeping with your eyes half open, can't even rest when you are resting! haha

& this little gem. You LOVE sleeping on me again, I am not complaining. This night you fell asleep around 6:30 & were ready for it to be bed time, not just a nap. You were super upset when you woke up and only calmed down when I laid back with you. When Daddy got home I was STARVING & he brought me some tacos in bed (: You also woke up around 11:30PM very awake & refreshed & wanting to play!

I took this video before we moved, I was packing and you were playing. Watching you learn, grow, and explore is something I never thought would just move me so much. This video is especially cute with your sock monkey pj’s and your little sock monkey friend (which is actually Elley’s toy, but sharing is great too!)

I am running out of time to perfect cupcake & frosting recipes using almond flour & maple syrup in time for your birthday, I need to get on it. I can’t believe it is less than a month and I know it is going to sneak up on me SO FAST.

We are off to Arizona to spend some time with your grandma & grandpa & friends for a little bit this month, soak up some sun, go to Xander’s first birthday party, and relax before we head back to California & get to planting our garden & raising some chickens!

XOXOXO

43 weeks old.

43 weeks!!!! This is how long I believe you were in my belly, and now you have been in the outside world that long!!!!

Well, this is the week that mama got the flu 😦 seriously, awful. I will always be an advocate for breastfeeding, breastfeeding support, breastfeeding education/knowledge, breastfeeding normalization,  but really, breastfeeding is FREAKING HARD. We got off to such a rough start and it really was not until this month (our tenth) that I actually enjoyed breastfeeding. You finally calmed down when you feed, snuggle up with me, and take your time. You don’t pop on & off as much anymore & although you are still crazy sometimes & pinch & hit & pull & kick me, sometimes you are super sweet and it is just such a cozy time. Up until this point it was HARD WORK, lots of hard work, all day and all night but I will never miss an opportunity to sing the praises (at maximum volume!) of breastfeeding for babies. And not just breastfeeding, but exclusively, on demand, daytime and night time (if requested) breastfeeding. I have gotten the flu TWICE since I have had you (seriously, insane, considering I hadn’t had the flu in over ten years since before this year) with diarrhea, uncontrollable vomitting, and body aches. I have also had a week long stint of e. coli poisoning and colds. But you, you have not been sick a single instance in ten months. A runny nose has been the extent of it and I have so much gratitude in the powerful workings of nature. Now if I write this and then you come down with the flu I am going to be so sad, but what will be will be and I am just so grateful to my body to provide you with such an irreplaceable form of nourishment (and also so often overlooked, comfort!!).

Well on with this past week’s happenings. There is no documentation of New Year’s Eve or New Years Day because I was still on the mend (and none of us actually were even awake at midnight) but great things lie ahead for us in 2013, we just know it.

the day after Christmas we went on a brisk morning walk to meet one of mama's dearest friends that she does not get to see enough, Sunny. It was your first time meeting her (:

42 weeks old.

Well this post is going to be crazy picture heavy because of the 456,789,678 snapshots we took over the holiday celebrations.

IMG_5198Now that Daddy is gone at work all day I take TONS (tons more than the already tons that I took previously, yikes!) of pictures of you throughout the day to document our happenings for him so he doesn’t feel left out (: Here you are enjoying some breakfast, cuties (clementines) are your absolute FAVORITE. You go crazy for them & yell & scream if we don’t peel them fast enough & often just try to eat them with the skin still on. Your other favorite is blueberries. (I may have mentioned this already last week when talking about food, I apologize.)

IMG_5201another high chair shot, you are just TOO cute!

IMG_5200You crawled into the game room & all of a sudden I heard you protesting about something so I went in there to find you like this. No idea why but seriously, hilarious. Apparently you thought you were getting arrested???

IMG_5199

Needless to say, you couldn’t get down, and needed my help. ha ha ha (:

42 kissWe were waiting for our friends Rome, Jessica, Luthien, Bastian, & Baby (in Jessica’s tummy!) to come over this down & just playing around with the camera. You are so funny with your pointer finger these days & use it often to touch things (just with that one finger) & wave at things & of course put in your mouth.

IMG_5237more playing, I just LOVE all of your faces. So expressive since you were a tiny baby and it definitely hasn’t changed. The top right is definitely my favorite, gosh you are just so cute I can not handle it.

IMG_5241Jessica & Rome brought you your first gifts!!!! This amazing wood toy truck with two wooden people. We have the very same taste in toys. You just started getting into things that roll so it was perfect. They also brought you a super cute, creative, book that I can not wait for you to read in a few months.

IMG_5240I love watching how you play with things….

IMG_5206

Another AWESOME Thresh expression caught for daddy… seriously your hands & pose in this picture just KILL ME. Your sweater & no pants with socks is pretty darn cute too. You crack me up all. day. long.

IMG_5260We decided we wanted to go check out Christmas lights not to far from grandma & grandpa’s neighborhood… you were NOT feeling it that night. Cold, tired, who knows but we walked with you in the Ergo & you cried the whole way there & back, very surprising & unlike you, you are never that angry being worn, but once we got on the street with all the lights you were totally fine – looking around taking it all in. It was a pretty awesome spread, they even had a horse drawn carriage, crazy!

IMG_5270I was not successful at capturing a family shot by any means – but you get the jist – daddy, mama, baby, pretty lights (:

IMG_5286Saturday night I had to take your friend Layla & here mama & papa to the airport, you were sleeping when I left which isn’t always that great as you can be very grumpy when you wake up but you were happy hangin’ with your daddy. I just love this shot of you two, too much for my heart. You guys are becoming so much closer these days, maybe when things settle down Daddy can do a guest post for us & fill you in a bit on you two!

IMG_5252Just another night hanging around at home, trying on grandma’s head bands. Again, your expressions are just hilarious!!!!

IMG_5275Christmas jammies! Grandma got these for you & we used this shot to make her & grandpa their christmas present! We framed it next to an imprint of one of your hands & one of your feet. It turned out super precious, we had a hard time capturing a good picture but then we got this one and it is pretty much perfect.

IMG_5402Christmas Eve Daddy had the flu so it was just me & you & I was pretty depressed. Grandma had to leave to NM and I was pretty sure Christmas was ruined. I am not a Christmas person by any means and I will probably write a post on our thoughts & opinions and what we hope to do with you soon but it was still supposed to be a joyous day spent with family and it was looking bleak. His flu was only 24 hours though & he felt better Christmas morning, yayyyyy! We put you in your stocking & again, the face! oh my gosh just too cute for words. You had so much fun opening presents, you loved your xylophone the most, finally crawled through your tunnel, got a little chair the perfect size for you, and just brought a joy to the day I didn’t even think was possible.

IMG_5344After a big breakfast of french toast & bacon for everyone it was time to get ready to head to great grandma’s.

IMG_5423You had the BEST outfit thanks to mama & grandm’a friend Anji. She gifted you this adorable red sweater & hand me downed the best collared shirt to go under it. The perfect Christmas outfit.

IMG_5444Mama & Papa had to coordinate with you too, of course.

IMG_5446Great Grandma Benj & Russell gifted you tons of toys, and this rocking horse! You are still a tad small for it & weren’t really that comfortable on it then but since you have happily rocked on it a couple of times.

IMG_5468That day I picked a ton of beets from great grandma’s garden & today got to cooking them up! I boiled the beets for us to eat & put some stems & greens in a smoothie for you for breakfast, along with a frozen banana, carrots, flaxseed, avocado, orange juice, and coconut milk.

IMG_5277You slurped it down, smoothie mustache!

IMG_5487After breakfast we spent some time in the backyard where you proceeded to attack the remaining chili plant, along with shoveling handfuls of dirt in your mouth. Such a silly baby.

IMG_5460After an outfit change you played with your new magnetic Melissa & Doug letters & objects on the fridge while mama prepared food.

Whew! It was a busy week, and you have now completed 42 weeks of life. I hope you had as much fun as we did over the holiday and I can’t wait to spend a million more with you! Well, as many more as you are willing (; xxxxoooo

41 weeks old.

another week gone in a blink of an eye. Wednesday & Thursday we spent doing hard manual labor to remove our beloved garden from the house in Tempe, sad days. We donated the beds and all of the soil to an amazing organization though, Harvest for Humanity, which I guess was a blessing in disguise since we never would have discovered them if we didn’t have to dismantle our garden. I can’t wait to go volunteer there after the holidays, they have two acres of food growing and it was BREATHTAKING! Eggplants, figs, lettuces of all sorts, mint, basil, seriously such awesome food wherever you looked, rows and rows of huge, healthy plants. Daddy & I were in farming heaven (we both not so secretly just want to grow food/farm more than anything else in life).

Friday me & you hung out while Daddy did some touch up painting at our house in Mesa. We were supposed to go to the mama & bebe holiday party / gift exchange later that afternoon but we had a rough day and it just did not work out, I was super sad about it too and everyone seemed like they had such a great time.

Saturday was a dinner to celebrate our friend Tommy’s birthday so we got dressed up & braved the rain (seriously it was coming down HARD, such a rarity in Arizona)

dinner date! (check out oliver, he is mesmerized by the rain..)

dinner date! (check out oliver, he is mesmerized by the rain…)

Monday, Daddy started a new job & is now gone from 7:30AM (before we wake up) until about 5:30/5:40PM. So it’s just me & you, all day every day. Monday we got lots of chores done around the house, and I just wanted to take a minute to talk about how DIFFERENT life is now with me & you. Now that you are crawling you are a lot more independent. You are happy to play with toys (& other very interesting things like purses, cupboards, kitchen utensils, door stoppers, christmas decorations) and will sometimes even crawl into a different room than me and entertain yourself without me even around at all!!!! I can keep you entertained by letting you rummage through the pantry and cupboards while I do dishes & cook dinner, go through the bathroom cabinets & throw around your potty while I do my hair & makeup, and dig through our essential oils & teas in the bedroom while I get dressed. You definitely still want to be held sometimes and being put down will not do, but we just snuggle up on the couch, nurse, and then you are usually happy to go back to playing! You love to steal toys from Oliver and will crawl around after him, and one of your favorite things to do is try to crawl up the different sets of stairs at grandma & grandpa’s, ahhhh!

Baby gates are in full effect…

so silly!

so silly!

But there is no way of blocking off the big stairs!!!

you got really brave this day & made it all the way to the top, ahh! You can never be left alone in this room now...

It really is so different now, it seems like everything changed so quickly. We are on a pretty good schedule now too, which evolved completely naturally (a lot of my reading says this but I had lost faith that we would ever have any sort of routine). You wake up around 8AM (often 8:30 this days, wow) & we go to the potty, brush our teeth, and get dressed. We play for a bit & then have breakfast. Then more playing & sometimes we go outside for some fresh air. Some mornings we have coffee dates with friends and then nap time is at 11AM. You usually sleep until 12 or 1 depending on how long it took you to go down, if you wake up prematurely, and I am sure a whole host of other factors going on with you that I am unaware of. If we have something we planned we usually do it right when you wake up, Tuesday we had a date planned with Vanessa & Emil to go pick some citrus & vegetables from a local garden. It was chilly that day & I was super excited because you could wear your new puffy vest from grandma! I had been looking for a puffy vest for you but never came across one in your size, so adorable!

sad that you weren't happy but seriously too funny that I had to capture.

If we don’t have plans we usually play & eat lunch or take a walk or do errands near by. I try to make it back home close to 3 so you can take your second nap. It usually falls between 3PM & 4PM depending on your mood, how early you woke up from your first nap, etc. While you sleep I usually get dinner going & then once you are awake you help me in the kitchen for a little bit & by 5:30PM you are in your high chair for dinner! You usually just share whatever I am having or a close, modified version and while we are eating Daddy arrives home to join us! You are always very excited to see him. The days don’t feel quite as long as I anticipated and we seriously do have such a great thing going between us these days. I am sure just as soon as I write that down it will change, but I am going to love it for as long as it lasts (:

Since we are in more of a routine I am making sure to sit you down in your high chair to eat at LEAST twice a day. If we have an early coffee date or something we may miss breakfast or if we are doing something in the afternoon could skip over lunch but I try not to miss both and we ALWAYS sit down for dinner. Here are some samples of things you are eating these days…

Breakfast: you HATE eggs. Of course, even the super expensive organic, free range, omega-3 ones from local farms that are just oozing nutritive goodness. It is seriously the ONLY food you refuse to eat… so breakfast is a little bit hard for me but I get creative…

Applesauce with almond meal stirred in

Almond milk yogurt with flax seed

Fruit: blueberries (frozen), clementines, pears, grapes, not too much is in season right now..

Apples with almond butter

Sweet potatoes

green smoothies

Lunch: Hummus

dinner leftovers from the night before

lentils

beans

sweet potatoes

avocado/guacamole

leftovers from breakfast: smoothies, yogurt, etc.

roasted veggies: fennel, squash, beets, etc.

aspragus tops

Dinner: some dinners we have been having as of recently include…

stewed lentils

white bean & kale soup

lentil & beet green soup

black bean & butternut squash chili

lentil stuffed bell peppers

tacos

garlic mashed potatoes with roasted brussels & cranberries

We won’t be feeding you any grains until at least two years old and then I think I will start with quinoa (since its technically a seed) then non glutinous grains like millet, amaranth, sorghum, & then properly soaked grains if/when necessary. Once you get your molars in we will add small amounts of meat to your diet, but I hope to keep it as local as possible buying only from farms near us that we trust & fish from fishermans’ that catch it all themselves.

This post has gotten pretty long so I will wrap it up, very excited for all that next week has to offer with your first Christmas festivities! xxxxoooo

oops, I almost forgot. Here is a picture of you just being oh so cute showing off the new puppy zip up grandma got you.
